Microdermabrasion FAQs
Some frequently asked questions about microdermabrasion:
What are the different methods of microdermabrasion?
What is microdermabrasion
It is a skin resurfacing treatment that rejuvenates and restores natural glow to the skin while enhancing callogen production.
It is a safe non-invasve treatment that can partially or completely remove the stratum corneum (dead outermost surface of the skin) by acting as a "sand blaster" to remove sun-damaged skin. hyperpigmentaiton, fine lines, and mild to moderate acne scars and other uneveness.
It is often preferable to alternate microdermabrasion treatment with chemical peels to improve the condition of your skin to achieve optimum results.
Different methods of microdermabrasion
There are two widely-used methods:
Crystal microdermabrasion
In this method, tiny crystals are blasted on to the skin to perform the exfoliatng process.
Diamond microdermabrasion
Here the exfoliation process occurs when a diamond-tipped head makes contact with the skin and abrades against it.
Both are safe for topical skin resurfacing.
Pre-treatment
Over the years, I have noticed that a simple pre-treatment procedure elevates the the benefits of microdermabrasion treatment . I now start most treatments with a 35% or, in stubborn cases, 45% Glycolic Acid peel. I leave this on the skin for a few minutes before I start the microdermabrasion treatment. I have found that the glycolic acid loosens up the top, dry, dead cells on the surface, therefore allows the microderm treatment to go a tad deeper. It also has a collagen-stimulating affect.
Before treatment, I would recommend the following:
Stop using products that contain aspirin or salicylic acid.
Stop smoking for a week. This improves the circulation of blood in the skin.
Stop using Retin-A, renova, Differin and certain glycolic acid products for about 5 day.
Avoid sunbathing, sunbeds, waxing, any chemical peels or callogen injections for 2 weeks.
Post-treatment
After the treatment, I always use a skin-appropriate calming mask, leaving it on the skin for 10-15 minutes.
I follow this with a calming serum, usually Skinceutical Phyto+, and one of the repair creams I use, such as Epidermal Repair(Skinceutical), TNS Ceremide Cream(SkinMedica), Recovery complex(Revale Skincare) or Kinerase Pro+Therapy Procedure Recovery with SPF 30.
After the treatment, and because the skin is freshly resurfaced and more vulnerable to UVA/UVB, you MUST use appropriate un protection.
